A new record was set by Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic this weekend in Turin.

This past Sunday, Novak Djokovic tied Roger Federer’s record of six Nitto ATP Finals titles after defeating Casper Ruud 7-5, 6-3 in the championship match at the prestigious season finale in Turin, Italy, capping in at a historic $4.7 million payday.

“It’s finals, usually these kind of matches are decided by very small margins and one break of serve was enough in both sets,” Djokovic said. “I knew Casper was playing really well coming into this match. I think we both served very well. I think in some decisive moments, like the 12th game of the first set, I just managed to put a few returns back in play, [to] make him run and make him play.

“I was really pleased with the way I was playing from the back of the court, particularly the forehand was looking to be really aggressive and it worked great, I am really pleased with the performance.

“A lot of nerves, particularly in that 30-all point, that was the longest rally of the match. As I said, you’ve got to stay focused the entire match, every single point. Momentum can shift to the other side very quickly. Seven years, it’s been a long time, but at the same time this – the fact that I waited seven years – makes this victory even sweeter and even bigger.”

Novak celebrated not only an undefeated event winning all three of his group stage matches, a semi-final contest against Taylor Fritz, and the final against Casper Ruud, but also that he is now the oldest champion in history clocking in at 35 years young. From Serbian heritage, Novak spent his summer taking home his fourth straight Wimbledon title, a collection of now 7 under his belt.

The ATP Finals is the season-end event for the world’s highest-ranked singles players and doubles teams, played on indoor hard courts. In 2022 the men’s tournament was held at the Pala Alpitour in Turin, Italy, between the 13th to 20th of November. The ATP Finals is organized by the FIT (Italian Tennis Federation) and the ATP (Association of Professional Tennis Players).

Pala Alpitour, also known as PalaOlimpico,  is the largest seated arena in Italy boasting over 15 thousand seats opened in 2005 for the Winter Olympics. Designed by two international architects, Arata Isozaki and Pier Paolo Maggiora, the Pala Alpitour has UNI EN ISO 20121: 2022 certification, also known as ISO 20121.
